Glossary

This glossary contains a wide variety of terms and symbols, some of which are universal in the Thoroughbred industry and others unique to equineline® Reports.

BOLD TYPE
Darkened or bold print used to accentuate black type in a pedigree.

CLASS PERFORMANCE INDEX (CPI)
An index ranking which is calculated for each year and based on:
  1. Horses of the same sex (i.e. only males compared to males and females compared to females)
  2. Horses of the same age
  3. Horses racing the same year(s)
  4. Horses racing in the same countries
All of the criteria must match for the comparison to take place. To calculate a horse's CPI, the horse's average earnings per start is compared to the average of the average earnings per start of all like horses (i.e. if a horse's CPI is 5, then his average earnings per start is five times greater than the average of all like horses). Note that this will never be a negative number.

DETAILED RACE RECORD
Start-by-start listing, includes date of the race, track and race number, distance, track condition, race type, value of race, weight carried, post and finish positions, lengths behind winner, winner's time, quarter times, money earned, claiming price, number of runners, top three finishers, and jockey, trainer and owner from the most recent start.

EDITED PEDIGREE

A pedigree using similar editing rules to those used in the production of sales catalogues. Computer editing techniques have been designed to accomplish this shortened version of the pedigree.

EQUIBASE® SPEED FIGURE
The Equibase® Speed Figure tells you how fast a horse has been running in its past races with a single number. Its sophisticated algorithms are based on the horse's actual time in combination with other factors, such as the condition of the track. A horse running in stakes company might earn a 90 speed figure, while a horse running in a claiming race might earn a 60. The Equibase® Speed Figure has been equalized for different tracks, distances and conditions, therefore an 80 at Laurel Race Course is the same as an 80 at Philadelphia Park.

The Equibase® Speed Figure is the world’s most widely distributed speed figure and is published in more than 24 million official past performance programs sold in North America annually. Equibase® Speed Figures are available for all North American Thoroughbred races since 1991.

INBREEDING
Indicates any horse that is repeated more than once within five-generations of a pedigree. An example of how inbreeding would be indicated on a report would be:

Horse Name: 3S x 5D

This means the same horse name appears in the third generation on the sire's side and the fifth generation on the dam's side.

STARTS PERCENTILE RANKING (SPR)
A method of comparison developed by The Jockey Club Information Systems, Inc. SPR compares horses based on the following:
  1. Horses of the same sex (i.e. only males compared to males and females compared to females).
  2. Horses of the same age (i.e. 2 year olds, 3year olds, 4year olds and 5year olds and up).
  3. Horses that race in the same year(s)
All three of the criteria must match for the comparison to take place.

To calculate a horse's SPR, the horse's average earnings per start are compared to the average earnings per start of like horses (i.e. same sex, age and year(s) record).

If a horse's SPR is 80, then it's average earnings per start are greater than 80% of like horses.

SUMMARY LINE RACE RECORD
Includes total years raced, starts, stakes wins, stakes places, total wins, total places and money earned.

SYMBOLS
* A symbol often seen on equineline products in front of a horse name which indicates the horse as been imported into North America. This was replaced in 1975 with the country of origin abbreviated (called a country code) and placed behind the horse's name in parenthesis.

= A symbol often seen on equineline products in front of a horse name which indicates that the horse has never been imported into the USA or Canada. Note: when a name shows both the = and a country code after the name, it designates the foaling country of the foreign animal instead of importation.

TABULATED RACE RECORD
Year-by-year summary of starts, wins, seconds, thirds and money earned. Stakes and miscellaneous information listed separately.

TEXT OR CATALOGUE STYLE RACE RECORD
Seen most often in pedigree products, this race record lists the number of wins, placings, ages raced and earnings in text format.

TIMEFORM RATINGS
Timeform Ratings are a considered assessment of the merit of a horse on form and are maintained for all racing in Britain and Ireland, as well as other major international races. The Enhanced Catalogue Style Pedigree with Equibase® Speed Figures and Timeform Ratings includes Timeform Ratings since the year 2000.

X-CROSS PEDIGREE
Listing of a horse's ancestors for the requested generations back. All listings include the state in which the horse was foaled, date of birth, color and sex.
